Paladin Storyline Part 1
story
This post is based on “Paladin”, the main storyline behind Mabinogi’s Storyline Quests. If you do not wish to find out about what happens next, feel free to return to the previous page and view other strategy guides.

1. The Path of the Knight of Light

You have received a message from Goddess Morrighan, asking you to become a Knight of Light. Hence, that seems to be the main objective of G2 Storyline Quests.

So let’s begin the G2, “Paladin”, Storyline Quests.

1) Knight of Light

Do you remember the keyword you acquired during G1, “The Advent of the Goddess”, Storyline Quests?

[Knight of Light]
The last words spoken by Goddess Morrighan. It seems to carry a very important meaning.

Goddess Morrighan has asked you to head over to Emain Mach to become a Knight of Light.
Emain Macha, the mecca of culture and art, is located west of Dunbarton.

Note that there are two ways to reach Emain Macha.

- west of Dunbarton -> Osna Sail -> Emain Macha
- south of Dunbarton -> west of Gairech -> west of Sen Mag Plains -> Emain Macha

Emain Macha has a beautiful, picturesque scenery; however, depending on your computer specifications, some difficulties in moving your character may occur. Please check your computer specifications and check only what is necessary in the option.

First, you must become familiar with the Knight of Light…

Oh, the Emain Macha Cathedral! Wouldn’t the priest at the Emain Macha Cathedral know something about it?

Priest James... Can you tell me anything about the Knight of Light? Goddess Morrighan has asked me to become a Knight of Light, but…

[James]
So you're saying that you were told to become a Knight of Light? Hmm. Then it might have something to do with the Paladins. I don't know the details but Nele the Bard would know about something like this. He might be able to tell you the history of Emain Macha or about Paladins in general.

When you finish your conversation with Priest James, you will acquire the [Paladin] keyword.

[Paladin]

Holy Knight: Another name for the Knight of Light.

Ah, the Knight of Light is referred to as ‘Paladin’. Next, let’s go speak with Nele at the Emain Macha Square.

Nele, I want to become a Knight of Light… a Paladin… What do I need to do?

[Nele]
If you want to become a Paladin, go talk to their leader Craig... He is a very passionate teacher who trains his students hard. You just need to go to the Training Center up north. It's easy to find, right?

You will find the Paladin Training Center on the way to the northern Coill Dungeon.

Note that any NPC in Emain Macha will guide you when you talk to them using the above-mentioned keyword.

2) The Lord’s Letter of Recommendation

Pass through the forest up north, and you will come across a knight wearing shining armor. Ah, he must be the leader of the Paladins Nele mentioned.

Using the [Paladin] keyword, start a conversation with Craig, the leader of the Paladins.

I want to become a Knight of Light… a Paladin.

[Craig]
Mmm... So... You're interested in becoming a Paladin? You seem like you want to train here, Hmm... Not everyone can become a Paladin. You must first swear your allegiance to the Lord, and take a pledge that you will give your life up for justice and righteousness.

The Lord himself will make the decision as to whether you qualify or not. You'll have to go get a recommendation letter from him. The captain of the guards should let you in if you tell him that you came to see about becoming a Paladin.

In order to become a Paladin, you must first prove that you’re a qualifying candidate.
The Lord of Emain Macha...?

Who is the Lord? And how will the Lord judge your competence?

You will find Rian and Esras when you enter the chamber of the Lord of Emain Macha.

[Rian]

A handsome young man is wearing a tailored shirt that makes a shade in sepia color over his lean body. His red hair is contrasting against his pale face and fair skin. Although he's a noble-looking young man, it is difficult to find any facial expression in his face at all. From time to time, he makes a deep breath that sounds more like a sigh.

[Esras]

Esras is a beautiful lady in a resplendent dress that reminds you of a grand Priest's ceremonial robe. Her skin is so pale that it seems almost transparent, yet her hair is shiny and full of life. She has a confident manner and her voice rings out in a clear tone. As soon as she feels my gaze, she stares back coolly at me with her lavender eyes.

Esras says she’s only the Lord’s advisor.

Well, then let’s try talking to Lord Rian using the [Paladin] keyword.

Lord Rian, I have something to ask you.

[Rian]
...Uh…Ummmm...
...

[Esras]
My Lord seems to be in great distress over territorial issues. …How may I help you...? I'll relay it to the Lord if you are kind enough to tell me.

But he hasn’t even heard what I have to say yet… I would like to train to be a Paladin. I’ve come to ask whether I qualify to train.

[Rian]
...

Lord Rian still remains silent. Then, Esras breaks the silence and replies to your question.

[Esras]
...The Lord has been waiting for much too long and he seems to be a bit tired. Let me explain this to you instead.

In order to become a Paladin, you must go through the training in Emain Macha. But we can't just let anyone or those without outstanding character to become a representative of the gods....

Show us that you can pledge your allegiance to the Lord and sacrifice yourself for justice.

Pledge your allegiance to the Lord…? Sacrifice…? Based on what Esras has told you, it really doesn’t seem like becoming a Paladin is such an easy task.

How can I prove my strength of character?

[Esras]
...If you donate a part of your savings to Emain Macha, the headquarters of the Paladins the Lord will write you a recommendation letter. Isn't that right, Lord?

Huh..? Donate my savings in exchange of a recommendation letter?? How does that prove anything about my character..?

[Esras]
So...if you donate 4,000 Gold, he will write you that letter. Do you want to donate?

You will be given two options in the Chat window: [Donate] or [Refuse]. What will you choose to do?

Buy a recommendation letter…? That doesn’t seem like the right way to become a Knight of Light.  How about… [Refuse]!

[Esras]
I'm sorry to hear that... You're going to walk away from becoming a Paladin because you're short on just a little bit of money...? You won't go anywhere with that kind of a mindset... It's not about the money but about showing your loyalty to the Lord... If you just don't happen to have the money right now, come back after you have enough. I'll give you your recommendation letter then...

So, there seems to be no other way to train to become a Paladin without the letter of recommendation, which means you will not be able to become a Knight of Light as Goddess Morrighan has requested.

You have no choice but to agree to Esras’ terms.

Talk to Esras again and, this time, select [Donate] when you’re given the two options.

[Esras]
Great. Here is the recommendation letter. Take this back to Craig. You can find him at the Paladin Training Center northwest from here. He will guide you on your path to becoming a Paladin.

You may now exit the Castle.

Something doesn’t feel quite right… Lord Rian didn’t say a thing, and you had to donate Gold to receive a recommendation letter… But despite your doubts, you’ll see that 4,000 Gold has been removed from your Inventory while earning [The Lord’s Invitation].

Let’s rush over to the Paladin Training Center.

3) The Paladin Training Course

Did you confirm that you have [The Lord’s Invitation] in your Inventory?

[The Lord’s Invitation]

An invitation with the Lord’s signature. IF I show this to the Paladin leader, I will be able to get trained as a Paladin.

If you’ve arrived at the Paladin Training Center with the Lord’s Invitation in your possession, start a conversation with Craig using the [Paladin] keyword.

Here is the recommendation letter. Can I train to become a Paladin now?

[Craig]
Hmm…I don't know if you've heard, but the training to become a Paladin is not as easy as you'd think… You'll have to prepare yourself. If you think you're ready to enroll into the Paladin course, tell me in my face that you are ready for the classes.

...You know how to request for classes or training...right?

For the Paladin Training Course, use the [Class and Training] in your Travel Diary to start a conversation.
However, there is a specifically scheduled time for the Paladin Training Course, so you can partake in the course only when your shadow points northwest.

[Craig]

The beginning of the Paladin Training Course is to evaluate your skills. I'll evaluate you on whether or not you are able to successfully carry out a mission. Evaluation requires money, so I'll need more tuition from you. Got it?

So much Gold is required to train to become a Paladin…

View your Inventory to check that you have received the [Red Wing of the Goddess] as well as the
[Barri Dungeon Pass for Paladin-in-Training].

[Barri Dungeon Pass for Paladin-in-Training]
A Barri Dungeon Pass for 1 for a Paladin-in-training. Place it on the Barri Dungeon altar.

[Red Wing of the Goddess]
This item moves the body and the spirit, with no damage, to a designated position. If the party leader uses it, all party members nearby will move together.
Destination: [Barri Dungeon Lobby]

Transport to Barri Dungeon using the Red Wing of the Goddess. The dungeon generated for Paladin training will have the same structure as the regular Barri Dungeon.

When you reach the last room in the dungeon, the Boss Room, you will encounter Miner Kobolds who are said to be harming the townspeople.

But based on what they’re saying, the Kobolds don’t sound like they want to harm the townspeople…

"This Gold’s for Dad’s medicine! "

"Once Kobold makes money for medicine, Kobold will rest."

They say they are digging Gold to pay for their father’s medicine. Yes, they are Fomors… but is it really necessary to defeat them when all they want to do is fulfill their filial duties?

But Craig has claimed that these Kobolds are pestering the townspeople… You will have to abide Craig’s request, and suppress any doubtful feelings you might have.

Defeating all the Kobolds in the Boss Room, however, is not the last step of the training.

You can complete this stage of training by clearing the dungeon; click on the statue of the goddess in the treasure chest room to return to the World.

If you have cleared the dungeon, open the Quest window and click [Complete]. You will be rewarded EXP as well as a recovery-related item.

You’ve successfully completed the first training.

You will continue to take Paladin classes in the following episode.

[Note 1]
The dungeon you enter using the Pass for Paladin-in-Training is a 1 player dungeon. If you fail to clear the dungeon, talk to Craig again to receive another pass.

[Note 2]
You must return to the World by clicking the statue of the goddess in the treasure chest room to clear the dungeon. Make sure to click [Complete] upon returning to the World.

[Note 3]
While you can return to Emain Macha on foot, you can also use the [Wing of the Goddess] item to be transported. The [Wing of the Goddess] is an item which will allow you to return to the last town you were in, so if you went to Barri Dungeon from Emain Macha, the destination will be automatically set to [Emain Macha]. You can purchase the [Wing of the Goddess] in the town shops, and it could be used for up to 8 players, so be sure to take advantage of this item.

[Note 4]
If Rian is not at the Emain Macha Castle, find the Strange Cat in Chief Duncan’s House in Tir Chonaill and select [Start G2], then return to the Castle.
